GOP report pans union ACORN link

WASHINGTON -- The Service Employees International Union works so closely with ACORN that it constitutes a "criminal conspiracy," claims a report prepared by congressional Republicans.

The report calls the groups "financially co-dependent" and depicts them as teaming to muscle corporations into making contributions to ACORN.

The SEIU, which represents more than 2 million service workers, was a key supporter of President Obama in his 2008 campaign. Its leaders counsel the White House.

The 68-page report explores the relationship between ACORN, a taxable, nonprofit community organizer, and a web of nonprofit affiliates.

It accuses ACORN of helping to spark the housing crisis by pushing banks to lower lending standards.
