Couldn't agree more! Protectionism of "public service" ivory towers needs to be smashed. Competition for city jobs, be they municipal workers, teachers, police, firefighters or emergency services need s to be increased by quadrupling the access to the perquisite learning institutions to these "plum" job opportunities. More teachers colleges, more police academies, more medical schools will create more competition, eliminate personnel shortages and bring wages back into some reasonable line.

I doubt that many public workers would quit were a 30% pay cut delivered, as even then, people, and many equally qualified and more desirous of working, would leap at the opportunity to fill such a vacancy!
