Another thing to remember is that HTML5 provides a method for directly embedding video streams into web pages, but does not require a specific codec (compression/decompression scheme).

H.264 is only one of the codecs that will be supported by HTML5. Ogg Theora is another, and as we've just seen, there are others, including the On2 VP6 and VP8 formats now owned by Google.

It remains to be seen which codec will become dominant. The market is such that multiple codecs will be used going forward, with the specific choice in any particular case being made for both business and technical reasons.
