Absolutely. But that is a developer conundrum. And an issue that will have to be addressed by the open source community.

It is hardly a major consumer issue.

Basically is says that certain apps are available on certain phones.

What is new about that?

The iPhone is a premium brand. And will remain so. Some Android phones maybe become premiums, others won't. The question of how the consumer base will react to the versions is hardly a foregone conclusion.

Also Google Android strategy seems, at least to me, not to be to sell phones, but to make it's server services available to a larger market. Driving the cost of smartphones down accomplishes this for them.

Developers can query the version their software runs on and enable or disable certain features. Not difficult at all to program and not unlike different than the xx versions (does anyone know how many software releases of the iPhone OS are out there?) of iPhone software out there.
