Fareed Zakaria said it perfectly: "People want social services, but do not want to pay for them. A person cannot get elected if they run on raising taxes or cutting social services. Well, we have to do one or the other. So the people are to blame, not the politicians. And the reason congress is frozen and likely to stay frozen. If someone has a heart attack they want to be able to dial 911 and have trained paramedics there immediately with an ambulance. That is a social service that requires taxes. But people seem unable to make the connection that they have to pay for that stuff.
