That isn't what I said. Of course you need to determine what version target you'll program for. If there are certain features that you need for 2.1 then you need to program for 2.1. However, your 1.6 app will run on a 2.1 machine. So you can easily know which features to enable based on the version that you are running on. BTW, I'm not talking about anything different here than just designing your Linux software to run under different versions of Linux or in this case the Java programming language under Linux and different packages.
