"I took the quote at face value"

No, you didn't. You gratuitously substituted YOUR idea of where rights come from in place of Rand's (well publicized) ideas. Thus you intentionally and maliciously folded her dead body into the straw man you created in order that you could unjustly ridicule and insult.

"Nozick's own libertarian political conclusions are similar to Rand's, but his essay is critical of her argument"

His prerogative.

"he argues, her attempt to deduce the morality of selfishness is essentially an instance of begging the question"

Well...he is wrong. ...rationally prefer(ring) the state of eventually dying and having no values" IS A VALUE and if it is indeed rational, then it is a RATIONAL VALUE. If it is irrational, then it is an IRRATIONAL VALUE.

"she asserts that preserving one's own life is objectively the highest value because it makes all other values possible"

One can have neither rational nor irrational values if one is dead. Nozick ought to be capable of understanding that.
