It may. For example, mandatory car liability insurance has worked well, hasn't it? I don't see why we can't do the same thing in the health insurance industry. I don't like the idea of the government getting into the business by competing against insurance companies, but I see no problem with requiring everyone to have insurance. I see that as a very important breakthrough, in particular, because we have uninsured people who are free riding on the insurance premiums the rest of us pay.

So if the GOP were to look at it that way, as a solution to the free rider problem, then maybe it would be more palatable. Of course, honestly, I don't think the GOP is interested in solving health care, just as the Dems are not interested in solving social security.
