Yep, thanks to both of you. That was one of most interesting "spirited debates" on SI that I can recall.

One statement on which you and TJ both seemed to agree - and with which I disagree - is this:

Communists are no different that Capitalists except in how they attempt to obtain that power.

A simple definition of Capitalism is the right to ownership - including ownership of means of production. Such a right can only exist along with due process, and protection of the rights of an individual. This implies what is - at least - a considerable degree of individual freedom and opportunity.

A simple definition of "mature" Socialism is that everything of real consequence is under total control (which is as good as ownership) by the political bosses. Individual rights may get lip service, but in fact they are routinely disregarded, for the sake of the "greater good" -- read, for the good of the ruling classes and those who are "connected".

It is inevitable that Socialism must regress into an evil arrangement. Socialism comes in shades of gray... it can evolve step by step, as the road to serfdom.
