"It has been pretty interesting to watch how Reagan wound up being deified in the late 1980s/early 1990s. He had his supporters when in office, but it wasn't nearly like what he got after he left office."

Who did the (R)'s have to look up to? Lincoln? The (D)'s had FDR, and even Truman has been looking better. After Nixon, they desperately needed somebody. When you thought of (R) presidents, it was Nixon and then Hoover who came to mind. The Gipper won the job by default.

The party decided that canonization into sainthood was needed.

They killed him later in the '80s for using diplomacy with Gorby, wanting to get rid of nukes, and raising taxes.

They changed their mind again in the mid-90s when they really needed a hero.

Reagan was popular during his Presidency too. During his tenure, he turned the economy around and helped to bring down the Soviet Union. He was a good leader with great speaking skills. Look at the wide margin he won reelection. This speaks for itself on his popularity.
