Good job with your daughter! ... Would an MLP meet your objectives? Or something in energy like a BP or CVX. She can relate to fueling up the car. Keeps it simple I think.

I'm enjoying all of the discussion about getting kids investing. I've often sat down with my daughter with my laptop doing my investment research/plans, throwing out casual comments about what I was doing while she was semi-paying attention as she was growing up... most of her interest in future stuff though involves developed and raw land I own in a very old (our family's 4th generation) resort area in NW lower Mich., but she was also very involved with the money we invested for her college education -- and which we sold before the meltdown because rule #1 in my list is money I will need in the next 2-5 years does not belong in stocks... because of her love of Apple computers and stuff, we ended up with a large position in AAPL, mostly because of appreciation (cost basis 3.51, sold @ 185-186 range; also ADBE w/ cost basis 4.91 and sold @ 45 -- those two stocks largely paying for her college education -- she's a freshman now)...

I have learned a lot here about how to get her (re)started in saving/investing for her future when she begins to earn money after college.
