"Liberals" in that study don't mean the whole of the left, but one group, and their educational achievement is similar to that of "Enterprisers", a much less statist group.

Looking at the left and the right in the US overall, you find a higher percentage of liberals have graduate degrees, but also a higher percentage of liberals have very little education. Those in the middle are more likely to be conservative.
