Stupak says many Dems opposed to health care bill

beltway-confidential

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., said Wednesday the House will have a hard time passing Obama's compromise health care proposal and not just because of controversial abortion funding language that pro-life House Democrats oppose.

Stupak, speaking on Fox News, said he has talked to "15 or 20" members in the past 24 hours who say "there are other problems with this bill," in addition to the abortion language, which Stupak believes will lead to taxpayer funding of abortion.

Democrats, he said, are opposed to the plan's language taxing expensive health insurance plans and don't like the fact that the reforms don't kick in until 2018.

Stupak said the bill would need to be amended in order to be acceptable, but there will be no opportunity to do that, he said.

"We have some real legislative and procedural concerns with what the leadership is trying to do with this legislation," Stupak said.

The House in November passed a health care bill with language that would have barred public funding of abortion, but the Obama plan includes the Senate wording, which is less strict.

Even if they saved his ass, he won't be grateful.
