Despite claims, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., says he didn't hear N-word at Tea Party protest

James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal has the Zapruder-like analysis of this one. After it was reported that North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler also heard racial epithets being shouted at black congresmen, Taranto decided to give his office a call. It turns out that Shuler says he never heard any racial epithets and the reporter wrote that he did was apparently confused:

<<< When we phoned Shuler's office this afternoon, press secretary Julie Fishman told us the local reporter misunderstood. According to Fishman, Shuler's comments to the Times-News referred to the general tenor of the protests, not to the black congressmen's specific allegations. >>>

Taranto unpacks a lot in the post, so read the whole thing. Speaking of Zapruder, even though there were, oh, eleventy billion cameras present when the alleged epithets were hurled, shouldn't somebody be able to produce documentary evidence of this by now? But hey, Al Sharpton says he's seen the tape and if you can't trust a guy who's been convicted of slander and defamation of character to tell the truth about these matters, who can you trust?
