have heard the term widely used now

It has been widely used by those that dislike the tea party movement - it is a term used to ridicule rather than a term that people call themselves. You will never hear Anderson Cooper use the term again - for good reason.

I am not part of the tea thing so I am not offended BUT I understand why others might be offended, just as I understand how other "widely used" negative names can be seen as offensive. Being "widely used" does not make a term proper or civil.

I agree that some or many in the TP crowd have used insults and distortions - responding with different insults does not seem appropriate to me.
