Perhaps it's because a Canadian system would destroy the jobs in the private insurance world,

Not all the jobs. There will still be plenty of various supplemental plans like there are now for Medicare recipients.

Dems aren't looking good in this debate so far, I think.

I thought Alexander and Coburn were quite good but the rest of the Reps were largely making campaign points. Obama was quite good. The dominant figure. I thought Rob Andrews was good and, you won't like this, but Louise Slaughter was terrific.

Sebelius surprised me. I thought she was good.

>>Perhaps it's because a Canadian system would destroy the jobs in the private insurance world, that Dems have not tried to educate the public. To that I would say that the US could have a hybrid system. We don't have to adopt completely a Canadian or French system, for ex. We could design something unique to our system and preserve most of the jobs in the private insurance industry.<<

Indeed. We could offer Medicare to all, with premiums set at higher rates for older people until they reach retirement age, when the current rates would apply. Then, require everyone to carry insurance, and let private plans compete with Medicare. Nobody would be forced to have government health insurance if they didn't want it.

I do think we should not require everyone to have coverage that goes beyond the basics. The current healthcare bills are problematic in that regard.
