It's one of the primary reasons why I didn't vote for Bush the second time around, even though I voted for him in 2000. It's also the reason I voted for Obama. I thought he'd be different, but on many things, he's a lot like Bush. I know he may seem that way to you but he's not the same as Bush if for no other reason that he has surrounded himself with talented people. What I don't think a lot of people realize is that the US is like a huge ocean liner. You can change its direction but it takes time.....its both a boon as well as a negative. Obama had to get through the economic crisis before he can do anything substantive. However, you are seeing small things happen.....like the change in the cafe standards for cars, awarding money albeit a small amount for high speed rail, strengthening environmental laws, etc. These changes will multiply and grow as the economy improves. As for Afghanistan, anyone who thought we could pick up and leave overnite were deluding themselves. We have a committment to keep and finish up. He is doing it. And please take notice......real progress is getting made in Afghanistan for the first time in years. And so I must be frank......Obama is the best president we have had in decades but I think you all who voted for him and now want to deny him need to develop some patience. Just my observation. On health care, though, I disagree with you a little bit. The health care bill Obama is proposing could be a windfall for health insurance companies. Although it has some things in it that will decrease their profits, the bottom line is that they get 30 million new customers. So what they lose in margins, they make up for in volume. Honestly, the bill is so complex, no one really understands it. I think the GOP may be correct in saying that we need to break it apart and pick out the good things in it and pass those a bit at a time. That way, at least we can all understand what we're getting. I don't believe in starting over completely like Cantor and McConnell are saying. But I do believe in disaggregating that monster bill and choosing the good parts. At this point, I want a bill passed. I don't trust the Rs....they do not have good intentions. Get it passed and we can go back and amend it to make it better. Health care reform is long overdue in this country and we are the last of the major nations to have the kind of health care proposed in the bill. Our current system is badly broken.
