I give you my views on similar situation when it was plain to see the demise was coming soon. Brazil 1979. Three years before Mexico default hit and LATAM went into Lost Decade.

Government tried to assure people that the whole thing was OK.
Hid the bad news.

Because it needed to say everything was OK, it could not take any action.

Once it the inevitable hit, it was worse due to a main reasons

People in its vast majority was not prepared for the outcome. The human being if had lowered their expectations made some countermeasures and prepared psychologically for the bad times they had to face.

Perhaps because it was because I had not profitted handsomely from the boom years of the so-called 'Brazilian Miracle' I had reasons to be skeptical.

Perhaps the ones who had profitted had their heads on the sand and diod not want to contemplate the reality that was about to hit.

Perhaps it is on my DNA to keep my eyes open and my ears to the ground. Fact started making the necessary countermeasures early 1979.

If I can say somehtinjg that really saved me from the fate of the normal Brazilian was that I had the prepared mind.

<<Surprisingly, Californians don't panic as easily as I would expect>>

... better to panic early, this time, i believe.

<<I don't think Intel will stop making chips, or Hollywood will stop movies, or farmers plow under their crops if the State Government has trouble paying their bills>>

... unclear. re-domiciling is an expectation of mine for industrial firms, as new investments are made elsewhere due simply to corporate strategy, focal point, and risk management issues;

movies follow people who make movies;

crops ... that is for the third world, and should do well when usd crashes against rmb, eventually ;0)
