At the end of 2009 Toyota manufactured 1.1 million car/trucks in the US toyota.co.jp

They sold about 1.9 million in the US in 2008...

GM sells a lot of cars in China, made in China for I guess the same reason Toyota sells a lot of cars in the US made in the US.

GM has 12% of the Chinese Market.

I don't think the Unions are to blame here personally. Everyone wants the jobs on their turf.. I'm sure no union fan but it's hard to compete with Chinese wages... and live in the US.. I guess the alternative is back to the closed system with high tariff walls.. There'd be a lot less folks driving... energy crisis solved..
