Uh? It doesn't work that way. Medicare is administered directly without private insurance involvement.

Perhaps, before we expand a Medicare-like system to every resident of the US, we ought to examine why it is on its way to go broke?

Let's get real here...Medicare insures seniors...the most expensive age group in the country by far. The program negotiates rates so low that most medical providers lose money. Fraud and abuse doesn't even come close to making up the difference. The program is clearly underfunded for what it does. Private insurance companies have it easy by comparison.
