Mish, you may want to coin a name for using sales tax as a measure of retail sales.

Some states even add sales tax on gasoline, so energy is not completely excluded in sales tax numbers.

It's likely using a term like "core sales tax" to harness the trend in core retail sales could be beneficial. To get a broader look at things the internet transaction might need to be incorporated. However, you have a good start.
