It all started once the Japanese entered the fray.
They created a new way of doing business by under cutting the western industrial nations.

Attacked the west exporting their way out of poverty.
Facing losses western industrial nations reacted by introducing Lean Accounting.
A way to pare cost to the bones.

But the Japanese had a new system built on low cost manpower. The west needed to shave here and there to match the pricing system of the Japanese.
Western industrial nations used the Asians to cut costs using cheap manpower to keep profits up.
Elmat was used as cheaper manpower than Siemens German employees, as way for Siemens to compete with NEC (a Japanese telecoms vendor)
All the above created a culture of CHEAP=BETTER.
You can blame planes falling from the sky on that above as hordes of people flies the cheapest route, plane or airlines.
