"Pyrrhic victory" - you won but you're going down in flames, nonetheless.

Pyrrhus was the king (can't recall the name of his kingdom) who defeated the Romans, but at great cost. Lost most of his army in the process.

Inre shorting. Yes, it's fun as hell (especially if you're an adrenaline junkie), but it can be a great way to lose LOTS of money.

I normally take a smaller postion than with my longs. That way if it backfires I can get out with a smaller loss and when a stock does go down, it goes down quick so even a small position can reap BIG bucks.
Look at Newbridge Networks. Even 100 shares woulda been a nice days work.
The Japanese say it nicely. "tis easier to run downhill than up."
What took weeks to make by going long can be made in a few hours by going short, IF you choose the right stock.

Is it fairly reliable to short when terrible earnings report comes out if you sell immediately that morning and wait a few days to buy back.
VERY risky. Usually it's already a done deal. How many times have you seen a stock come out with crappy earnings only to see them rally because it had already been priced into the stock?

Do you have any time period for yourself when you have decided to short a stock?
Faster the better.<G>
This is when the charts come in handy.
ex. -The last short I did had a support level at around 28-30 where I covered the short. The stock rallied of that level and probably won't see that price again.

As far as yer printer problems go, your're asking the wrong guy. My technical expertise swings towards the military school of problem resolution. -Get a bigger hammer!
When I have tech problems with my computer I usually beg for help here or kick the damn thing.
