Well, remember that when the GOP was in power, they had the Independents with them. When they lost power the Independents went with the Dems. The rightwing nutjobs really alienate the Independents. I think the saner elements of the GOP recognize that to get back to power, they have to excise the crazier fringe, which threatens to paint the whole party that way.

Unfortunately for the GOP, the majority of the remainder are pretty far right and are flirting with nutjobbery themselves. Their biggest task is to hope the Independents don't wake up before November. If the Dems pass health care and move on to Wall Street regs and energy before November, and the economy recover nicely as well, then the GOP is in trouble.
