Lula travelled unexpectedly on Monday afternoon to Chile to meet with his Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet in Santiago to show solidarity with the Chilean people after a massive earthquake killed at least 723 people.

Lula arrived at the Santiago international airport with key Brazilian congressional leaders, and is meeting with Chile President Michelle Bachelet at the airport to discuss aid strategies following Saturday's earthquake. The earthquake badly damaged parts of Santiago and hit especially hard its second-largest city of Concepcion as well as the Andean nation's central and southern coastline.
