Here's the key information....

Sounds like the grandparents were overbearing with the religious stuff and the young man was fairly intellectual and being to think for himself. It says he liked to argue (debate) and examine all sides. That would not sit well with the church people... The church folks should take a look deep inside themselves....they have failed this young man and he cracked and turned to violence.
