M2 PRESSWIRE-4 November 1997-HEWLETT-PACKARD: Next-generation HP Vectra VE PC gains 75 percent in performance (C)1994-97 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* New value-priced corporate desktop PC expected to lead the industry in performance and manageability

Hewlett-Packard Company today unveiled a new, highly manageable HP Vectra VE PC based on Intel's Pentium processor with MMX technology. The HP Vectra VE PC has been completely redesigned around a new motherboard and chassis to deliver optimal performance and manageability for both corporate users and MIS managers. With a massive 75 percent increase in performance over the previous HP Vectra VE PC, the new model offers remarkable value and is expected to start at an estimated street price of as low as $999 (U.S.).

HP's new Vectra VE PC is the first value-priced commercial PC to include as standard, today's "big four" hardware features: Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI), SDRAM, Ultra ATA and Universal Serial Bus (USB), bringing enhanced performance and manageability to the corporate desktop. Ultra ATA-33 hard-disk drives nearly double transfer rates to 33MB/s (from 16.7 MB/s) while SDRAM gives more efficient data transfer over conventional EDO memory. Combined, they provide considerable increases in performance. The HP Vectra VE PC also includes future-proof technologies such as ACPI architecture and USB, which offer enhanced upgradeability and connectivity for the corporate customer.

As part of HP's commitment to drive down computing costs, new manageability features have been added to the HP Vectra VE PC that make it even easier for MIS managers to service and maintain their networked PCs.

These include the following:

* ACPI -- an architecture that will allow customers to take advantage of enhanced power-management capabilities on future operating systems;

* Multiple PC Remote BIOS Flashing -- a special feature that enables simultaneous remote BIOS updates across a whole network of PCs from a single console;

* Remote Power On (RPO) -- a feature that, enabled on both the 10 and 100Base-T modes of the integrated networking card (not available on all models), allows MIS to power-up machines remotely during off-hours;

* Approved third-party network drivers (3COM, Intel and IBM) -- preloaded, offering faster LAN-card installation, greater reliability and improved HP support for leading network platforms; and

* A fully compliant system with the industry's latest desktop-management standards, such as Intel's Wired for Management baseline specification and DMI 2.0.

Standard HP Vectra VE PC features include the following:

* Intel Pentium 166MHz, 200MHz or 233MHz processors with MMX technology;

* Up to 32MB SD-RAM memory standard;

* A choice of Ultra ATA-33 disks, up to 3.2GB;

* Integrated 64-bit S3 Trio64 V2 graphics with 2MB video memory standard;

* Industry's fastest 24X MAX CD-ROM drive (CDS models);

* Integrated RPO 10 and 100Base-T LAN Card (not available on all models);

* "Toolless" and customizable 4x5 or 5x4 slot expandable desktop chassis format;

* Two USB ports;

* HP TopTools PC-management software;

* Microsoft Windows 95 pre-loaded; and

* McAfee VirusScan.

U.S. prices and configurations for the HP Vectra VE commercial PC are as follows:

Pentium processor RAM/HD CD-ROM LAN Estimated with MMX technology Street Price 166MHz 16/1000MB --$ 999 200MHz 16/2100MB -- 10 and 100BT 1,208 200MHz 32/3200MB 24x MAX -- 1,432 233MHz 32/3200MB -- 1,406

All HP Vectra PCs have the most comprehensive DMI implementation on the market, with 25 percent more DMI attributes than any other commercial PC, and they come standard with HP TopTools PC-management software. A recent study from International Data Corporation (IDC), a research firm based in Framingham, Mass., indicates that HP TopTools can provide savings of up to $941 per PC per year, or an annual savings of nearly $1 million for an enterprise of 1,000 PCs or more when combined with manageable HP Vectra commercial PCs and a network-management platform such as HP OpenView.
