Ted, one thing to remember about the Richter scale is that it measures the total amount of energy throughout the entire quake. That means longer quakes will always measure higher on the Richter scale, even if the jolting isn't as strong as some other shorter quake.

I suspect the 8.8 in Chile was more of a longer quake than a sharper one.
