Yes, they were considered to be inappropriate just as now some people consider a marriage between people of the same sex to be inappropriate. Not "just as", they where considered marriages by essentially everyone. No they weren't. Interracial marriages were illegal in many states up til 1967 when the Supreme Ct ruled. Here is map of which states made interracial legal when: Before 1887, most of the country did not allow such marriages.
