Even a "casual" observer can quickly notice that those who oppose the current proposal do so most often by defending the status quo...

I don't think so. If some proponent of the proposal makes an assertion that might not be valid, for example, that 47 million without insurance one or the 37th ranking worldwide, to take two of the most common and most ridiculous, one argues that they aren't true. In the course of doing that, one would argue that really only 12 million are without insurance and that even those have access to the system. You might take that as a defense of the status quo but it isn't. It's merely a challenge to a false claim. It's not bragging that the current system is wonderful because only 12 million are without insurance, only that the 47 million number is exaggerated.

I think that the current system needs work. I think that most people who opposed the proposal do. Every once in a while you see claims that we have the best health care system in the world. But even with that you can't assume that the person making that claim is defending the status quo in its entirety, only that he is challenging the claim that the system is worse than it is. I agree that there are some arguments that are, in fact, defense of the current system but they are not as common as you perceive.

I have a lot of posts on this thread and I know that I have never been an apologist for the current system. If you think so, then you are misreading.
