Just 48% Say It’s Possible for Anyone To Work Their Way Out of Poverty

Americans place little store in the value of hard work these days.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 48% of adults now think it is possible for anyone in the United States to work their way out of poverty. Thirty-five percent (35%) disagree and say it’s not possible, but 17% more aren’t sure.

The new findings mark a continuing downward trend over the past 14 months of regular tracking on the question.

It’s the second month in a row that under 50% say it’s possible for anyone to work their way out of poverty - and the lowest level of confidence to date.

A year ago, 56% thought it was possible for anyone to work their way out of poverty, and just 28% felt otherwise.
