"Defunct empire must let go island they can no longer afford to have."

When a nation can no longer protect its citizens - it is no longer a nation. I cannot believe the UK would let the Falklands go. As for the US role in the whole thing - think Kenya. Think return of the bust of Winston Churchill. Think alliance of leftist loons - Christina and Barack.

Very sad.

Bob

Re: UK vs. Argentina -

Note the Argentina's military capability is considerable less than when the first Falklands war started - at least 25% less and maybe as much as 2/3 less.

Note that the author of the Newsweek article may be Irish - and the Irish are known for not liking British imperialism.

Also note that oil is near $81 a barrel.

Are you not missing the point of the black stuff beneath the wet stuff? More like can't afford not to have.

He he, the Brits were more defunct in 1982 than they are now. They even today have a pretty good fleet. And since when is Kirchner an iron lady by any means. If anything, Argentina is the defunct country. I don't think the Brits particularly care about the Falklands but they do care if they get nibbled in the but. And if that were to happen, I think the outcome will be the same that at the last go around.
