A good start would be to lay in a year's supply of food (fairly easy) and fuel (not so easy).

Learn how to grow a decent garden and keep enough supplies on hand (e.g. non-hybrid seeds that self replicate, unlike hybrids) to be self sustaining.

Food is the ultimate commodity when there isn't any.

This is basic, not intended to be survivalist.
