Didn't say it was. But this is hard evidence (a randomized trial) within the US system. Which ought to be more persuasive than saying someone else is doing it better. State senator Bill Perkins is trying to shut it down: nytimes.com (edit) Given that the students are chosen by lottery, I can't understand his objection. He seems to be in favour of equality of misery.

Of course charter schools to them, and many, is often a religious school which just teaches dogma. So you want to substitute public school for religiou schools? The best thing we could do instead of blowing up the public school system would be to provide free public preschool for all kids starting at 2.5 years of age. We put both of my kids into a Montessorie school at 2.5. Hlaf a day. they loved it. They teach the kids how to hang up their coats as well as their colors. The Montessorie school was so successful both of my kids were light years ahead of the rest of the kids when they hit kindergarten. And with such a good start school was always a piece of cake for both of them. Get those ghetto kids into pre school at 2.5 and they will usually do just fine going forward.
