"So you think Wal-mart is "too big to fail"?"

Dunno.

If they had to shut their doors overnight, there certainly would be a big impact.

The auto industry is very different from a retailer. Their supply chain can't just switch to another manufacturer overnight. Every customer uses different parts, there is nothing like commonality for much of the bulk of a vehicle. It takes time to design, tool up and produce a new line of parts. And there is a very high barrier to entry for the car industry, just ask DeLorean about that one. If anyone had the background and capabilities to make a successful startup in the mass auto market, it was John. He failed. As far as other companies stepping up to fill the vacuum, well, ask Toyota what can happen if you try to expand too fast.

It is just a bad comparison.
