GTE wins $0.5 B New contract for AOL 'net access provider

GTE Internet announced that it has been awarded a $500 million,
five-year contract extension with America Online to continue to
expand and operate its portion of AOLnet, the company's
high-speed, dial-up network. The overall value of the contract is
approximately $1.2 billion. When the original contract was signed
with BBN Corp. in March 1995, it was worth $55 million.

From Infobeat's Internet Daily.

This will fuel demand for RAS and ATM/IP/FR switches. GTE is an existing customer of ASND and CSCO. It will be interesting to follow-up on this news to see who will provide the NW gear. Usually, both incumbent will get a share of this pie for it's in the large ISP's interest to keep both cos. engaged so that they keep coming out with better architecture, NW gear and SW. Competition is good for business.
