One of the most chilling parts of The Road was when the father and son come across the infant on a spit. Ugh! I notice they left that part out of the movie.

Lucifer's Hammer (Niven/Pournell) and The Postman (Brin) are my two favorite post-apocalyptic books.

Lucifer's Hammer probably has the most believable scenario.
