Electronic medical records need to better focus on patients

Make them available to patients. most of us would hae a difficult time understanding them. After enough hours of consultations to translate to patients, doctors would make sure they were readable.

I wonder if they aren't overcomplicating things a little... perhaps expecting from the EMR's more than they can deliver. Ultimately, they can only imporve the flow of information, but at some point you still need a human mind to make sense of it. I am familiar with a few types of EMR's used in hospitals. They are not perfect, but they all help a little - especially with regard to labs and other reports, and also by not having to figure out people's crazy handwritings. Once I told a busy Pulmonologist - Intensivist that he could singlehandedly and instantly improve the level of care in the hospital - if he only started dictating his notes, rather than scribble them... :)
