S3 Expects to Revise Downward Net Income for Prior Periods
S3 INC. Expects to Revise Downward Net Income and Revenues for Prior Periods--
Ticker: SIII (news)
Highlight: PFE
Date: 971104

Nov. 3, 1997, S3 Inc. (SIII) said it expects to restate downward its net income and revenues for "prior quarters" because of "material errors in the timing of its recognition of sales to several international distributors" it has found.

The company said it expects to revise net income downward by a total of $0.14 to $0.29 per share, and to revise revenues downward by an aggregate $40,000,000 to $70,000,000.

According to its accounting policies, which it said it "does not believe have been fully adhered to," the company said it defers recognizing revenue on all sales to distributors until the product is actually sold by each distributor to its "end" customers.

"Based on the rates at which this existing inventory is expected to move through the channel, we expect the bulk of the revenue from that existing inventory to be recognized during the fourth quarter of 1997," the company said. "Any new shipments into the channel during, and subsequent to, the fourth quarter of 1997 will be recognized during the quarter in which those products move off the distributors shelves in line with company policy."

This company will be here a year from now, two years from now and so on. Yesterday's "shocking" news seems to have already been built into the price with the diminution beginning in September. As to "worthless", the same was said of NOVL (still here), OAKT (still here) and IFMXE (still here). Hell, if AAPL is still trading SIII will too.
I would not write this one off too soon. They still have product. Albeit, new management and a kick in the ass are in order.

Carolyn, You refer to >>>Bankruptcy. . .receivership. . .worthless security, etc.<<< I know that this company has some serious hurdles to overcome, but I don't think there is any indication that they are going down the tube at this time. If this were the feelings of all the investors you couldn't get 1 cent a share because the security would be worthless. While we all have bad gut feelings based on what we know, we still don't have enough information to make an intelligent and informed decision on how to proceed with the ownership of the stock we already have. Right now everything is pure speculation and it's an individual judgement call. If one feels the company is heading further south and possibly deep south then the only answer is to sell while you can. If on the other hand one feels that there is some hope then you hold. These feelings to hold or sell come from ones own interpretation of the information at hand. In the meantime it's fine to be really ticked off at the company's management but to make some of the comments that I have seen on this thread by some is like banging yourself in the head with a hammer. One only hurts him/herself. There are many shareholders that panic and sell based on these comments. Perhaps some of those that are banging the cage and making the most noise are doing it at their financial gain and your financial loss. After all that's just part of the game and why so many investors get eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Good luck to all during these trying times.
