I live in the North Bay, so I am local. There have been way to many upstarts wineries trying to make and market cult wines. those guys are really hurting. Even wines in the 20$ range are hurting.

My favorite indicator is the local discount wine/liquor shop and what they offer there for huge discounts. Even larger labels are selling there and then there are a lot of discount labels that sell local wines (from local grapes not California appellation, often with very good quality), I suspect those are surpluses from players that can't market their own labels but don't want to totally destroy there image

FWIW most of he wines I drink are in the 10$ range but of course I get good discounts being local. European vineyards always produced decent wines at he <10$ price point the Californian ones need to learn how to do he same thing.
