Microsoft Network Online Service Unable to Sign Up New Users

Redmond, Washington, Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp.
said its Microsoft Network online service is unable to sign up
new users because of a glitch in its computer database.

The customer database can't process information from new
subscribers and from existing ones who want to change their
billing information, said Ed Graczyk, lead product manager for
MSN. The problem began Monday night is being worked on, though he
couldn't say when it will be fixed.

The snafu comes three weeks after MSN was updated to offer
greater reliability, speed and convenience. The third-largest
online service behind America Online Inc. and CompuServe Corp.
has been trying to assure customers that it won't repeat an April
outage that halted their e-mail service. The latest disruption is
unrelated to the Oct. 13 changes, Graczyk said.
''There are some problems. They're relatively minor,'' he
said. He declined to say how many customers are affected.

MSN offers both fee-based and free information,
entertainment and services, such as the Expedia travel site. It
is owned by Microsoft, the world's biggest software company,
which is based in Redmond, Washington.

Microsoft shares rose 1/8 to 134 1/4.
