The purchase of candy is a net cost to people who buy it (they may get enough pleasure from the candy to justify the cost, but it doesn't produce any wealth for them). Also if oil is candy in your analogy, then everyone is going to consume the candy anyway. The difference is if they try to inefficiently and expensively produce it themselves, or again inefficiently and expensively try to produce some substitute for the candy (to extend the analogy perhaps solar power can be potato chips, while corn ethanol can be cheesecake), of if they buy the junk food from the store, like they are doing now, for much less money, and with much less effort.
