Was in Kiev last year with an associate who forget his passport at the hotel. We were passing by two cops who were busy listening when they heard English/Ingles they decided to ask us for our passports, i.e. shake us down for cash. I produced mine and my compadre said his was back at the hotel. The cops then begin to give us their speel that we would have to go down to the police station and process my compadre etc. etc. I said OK. They then began to say it would be unnecessary if we provided some funds and I said no way, let's go to the police station... they then let us go.

I'm pleased Toro stands by me on how to deal with the local yokels... don't give in and have plenty of back-up.

If you want to see really corrupt try crossing into Canada.

With every over-subscribed debt issue from emerging markets, and every credit downgrade in developed, rather than emerging economies, the classic distinction looks less and less meaningful.
...
But what is undeniable is growing interest from fixed-income investors in emerging, rather than developed economies.
