What did Reagan deregulate that prospered in a sustainable way? The stuff that comes to mind all crashed eventually, but maybe I am missing something.

I think deregulation went beyond banking. The airline and trucking deregulation started under Carter was continued and expanded under Reagan. We still had oil and natural gas price controls when Reagan entered office. The fairness doctrine was still intact.

I am guessing that if I got down into the weeds I could find quite a bit more, but just looking at it broadly, is it really any surprise that after the regulation of the 70's that we saw the deregulation of the 80's?

ATT was broken up. Perhaps the significant innovation that has occured since that time is a result?

The interesting thing to me about the Reagan years is that tax receipts, as a percentage of GDP, were pretty constant at 19% of GDP. Nevertheless, deficits began to accelerate (by historical measurements) which has always led me to believe that spending was the impetus. Perhaps it was mainly the increases in military spending.
