Except it has worked. Perhaps not as well as in the wildest visions of its supporters, but that shouldn't be the standard.

It isn't a matter of national defense or security. It also has little to do with NAFTA.

Its mostly a matter of improved productivity. We manufacture more with less. The all time high for US manufacturing output was right before the recession started. The trend in manufacturing is up not down. Manufacturing jobs are down for a very similar reason to why farming jobs are down. This is a great plus for the country not a loss.

Also note that even before the recession manufacturing jobs where down in most of the major manufacturing countries including China. It isn't other countries "stealing our jobs", its the world getting more efficient at producing things.
