Sometimes opposition is based on philosophy rather than just political considerations

I agree and I suspect that senators like Lugar might be a good example. Opposing the bill would be one thing; trying to bring the government to a stop is another.

Moreover, the overall Republican response has been just short of hysterical. There's a huge ingredient of it that's political fear.

As for Democratic opposition to cutting taxes, it's not the fact of that opposition, it's the over the top, we'll shut the government down, Gingrich-like, temper tantrums that suggest they are afraid of its passage for political reasons. More than political philosophy. Can't see Eric Cantor getting deep into the weeds of political philosophy, nor Bunning, nor Boehner, nor Shelby, nor, well, you name it.
