<1000 times worse than Japanese lost decade> Japan has now lost far more than a decade -- and they are in deep trouble on public finances. What Japan could have done, and should have done, is write-off the bad debts in short order 20 odd years ago. Instead, they decided to close thier eyes, hold their breath and stick their finger in their ears, hoping that it would all go away as the year wore on. But it did not work. Instead, they destroyed any hope of making a strong economic comeback.

While the differences between japan and the US are vast, our urge to protect the status quo reveals that we are just as dumb and weak minded as were the Japanese when it was their turn to face the music. The actions that supposedly 'saved' us in the last couple of years have effectively crippled the prospects for a robust recovery.
