they asked the people if they had health insurance. 12-15 years later if they died they blamed it on no health insurance, but they never checked to see if they got health insurance at a later date. so that's a bogus study.

I didn't have health insurance from 20 or so until I was 40. then I got it

Limitations
Our study has several limitations.
NHANES III assessed health insurance at
a single point in time and did not validate
self-reported insurance status. We were unable
to measure the effect of gaining or losing
coverage after the interview. Point-in-time
uninsurance is associated with subsequent
uninsurance
