The beginning of corn subsidies

In the 1960s, rising food prices became a national political issue. President Nixon told Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz to do whatever it took to bring down prices.

I promise you that this has very little to do with people's eating habits in the broad sense. Careless people eat what tastes good or what they have been brought up with.
