China launches first digital TV

SHAANXI - China has taken its initial strides into the digital future with the successful launch of its first digital TV.

The country's first sample IDTV was reported finished at a press conference held in September. Production will begin this October at China Huanghe Machinery & Electronics Co. Ltd. A small batch of units will be initially produced to ensure quality.

The 29-inch color IDTV can receive analog TV signals and translate them to digital, enabling the set to be put into use immediately. Most broadcast signals are still analog only.

Horizontal resolution is greater than 450TVL (television lines), vertical resolution is more than 500TVL, and S-end resolution more than 800TVL. The product is compatible with computer and multimedia products.

The product is the result of a joint effort involving China-Huanghe Machinery, Xi-an Jiao Tong University, Xi-an Electronics & Technology University and Shaanxi Broadcasting Equipment Factory.

The project, one of six high-tech projects being conducted in Shaanxi province, is sponsored by the provincial government, which has invested 20 million RMB (about $2.4 million) this year alone (earlier investment figures are unavailable). From the beginning of 1997, the project has been led by Huanghe Machinery.

The company aims to penetrate the big local markets initially. IDTV is to be its major product in the coming two years.

A Shanghai-listed company, Huanghe Machinery was in the red the past two years. It had the dubious distinction of leading the loss list of China's companies in 1996, losing 2.10 RMB (about 25 cents) per share. Analysts in China think that Huanghe's new high-tech product will help the company back into the black. -- October 15, 1997
